Assassin's Creed Valhalla: what period does it take place in

Ubisoft has always done a great job weaving fictional stories into actual historical periods with its Assassin's Creed franchise, and this latest title takes gamers into an era that has become extremely popular in recent years. Here we will explain when is Assassin's Creed Valhalla set?

What period of Assassin's Creed is set

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is about within the 9th century AD. During the invasion of England by the good Pagan Army. This is roughly 400 years after the Romans left Britain and the Golden Age of the Viking Age was in full swing.

In fact, this coincides with the period when the invaders from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden had formed into a cohesive force to conquer the four kingdoms of England: Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia, and Northumberland.

But Viking raids had already taken place along the east coast of England for nearly a hundred years prior, beginning with the infamous Lindisfarne raid in 793. During this early period, expansion of the Vikings would have arrived the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok. and left his mark.

In Assassin's Creed, Valhalla, the sons of Ragnar, or Ragnarssons, are important NPCs that feature prominently in the game's story, including Ivarr, Halfdan, and Ubba.

If you've watched popular Netflix shows about Vikings and The Last Kingdom, the times are pretty much the same as Valhalla.

To give it historical context without spoiling Valhalla's history, following the Great Heathen Army's attempt to pacify England, the Vikings permanently colonized a large area in the north of the country. The area was called "Danelaw" and lasted more than 100 years.

In fact, the earliest written recordings of Danelaw exist before Valhalla's history, which makes it a bit odd that we don't hear much, if ever, about the name of the treatise. But that at least explains why Saxon and Dane coexist quite peacefully in different regions of the game.

Of course, a bit of poetic license has been applied to the way the Saxons seem to be culturally accepting of the Danes in Valhalla, but, indeed, a lot of people don't appreciate how well the Vikings lived. Peacefully in England for a time. Much of the country's history.
