Bugsnax ending explained (spoilers)
Bugsnax may sound like an innocent and charming adventure game that you could compare to Pokemon Snap or Ape Escape, but if you dig a little deeper, this standalone title is seriously messed up. Things don't really get crazy until the final act of Bugsnax, and if you want to know what's going on, we've got a rundown here for you. Here's the Explanation of the end of Bugsnax for those who want inside information.
And just as a warning, there will be a lot of spoilers, of course. You have been warned!
Explanation of the end of Bugsnax
Alright, once you've finally convinced everyone in Snaxburg to come back to town, Filbo tells you that he wants to throw a big party with dancing and music to lift everyone's spirits. He even says that the party will change everything, which seems to herald the events that will soon take place on the island.
After talking to the 11 residents and encouraging them to hit the dance floor, Filbo talks to you and praises all the hard work the two of you have done to get everyone back to town.
While everyone is happy and celebrating life, Shelda arrives and says, "her end is near." As soon as she says that, an earthquake suddenly breaks out, and she says once again that fate is drawing near and prays to your gods. Oh, and then the island's volcano also begins to erupt; things are not going so well for our group in Grumpus.
Eggabell shows up in town and tells the group that he knows where to find Lizbert, prompting you to follow her up the mountain with Filbo to open a mysterious door by pressing a few switches.
Once the door is opened, the three of them find themselves in a creepy underground area known as Undersnax. It's sticky and cold, and there's food everywhere. After going through the narrow corridors, you end up stumbling across a coliseum-like area, and this is where Lizbert has been the entire time, except it looks a little different.
In an unexpected twist, Lizbert fell into an abyss and ended up being changed by Bugsnax. It also tells you and Filbo that the Bugsnax have been parasites all this time and have changed not only a person's body but even their mind. They are insidious creatures who prey on anyone's weakness.
Lizbert has managed to take care of some of the Bugsnax, but the rest are starving and shaking the soil of the island, causing earthquakes. Lizbert is the only thing holding the island together right now.
He then tells her to warn other people to leave the island as quickly as possible before everything falls apart. However, before leaving, Eggabell appears and, instead of leaving Lizbert, puts his body on Lizberts, and they combine to create an even larger Bugsnax monster.
You and Filbo head back to town to tell everyone the secret about Bugsnax and make sure no one else eats them because they know they're pests and all that.
Snorpy prepares the airship for everyone to board, and the Bugsnax have started attacking the city. After getting some awesome tools, it's your turn to gather everyone in town and save them from Bugsnax.
After going through various game sections and killing tons of Bugsnax, they all board the ship and successfully escape Snaktooth Island. A giant Bugsnax tries to take them down, but Lizbert and Eggabell show up to save the day, and they end up staying on the island, and we don't know what exactly happened to them.
After safely disembarking from the ship near the town, Filbo asks if he can stay with you as a roommate for a while and wants to help you tell the story of Snaktooth Island.
Now that he's back to work, his boss, C. Clumby Clumbernut, hears his story and thinks it's a compelling and dramatic statement, but sadly fires him for leaving the island without permission. And it also says that you are legally dead.
Filbo mentions that the elections are approaching and that he wants to run for mayor and asks for your help.
End of the credits scene
And that brings us to the end credits of Bugsnax, but there is a final scene that reveals that something sinister is going on in the background all this time.
This reveals that his former boss, Clumby, spoke to a mysterious person, who appears to be involved with the Grumpinati, Bugsnax's version of the Illuminati. He asks if they suspect anything about the real truth and then tells him that they should keep an eye on us.
Their phone conversation ends with two sentences: Tu Quid Edas and Omne Vivum Ex Bugsnax.
According to Google Translate, the first means something like "you are what you eat", and the second means "all life comes from Bugsnax".
The game doesn't go any further into this mysterious relationship between these two characters, but we do know that something has happened behind the scenes.
It could possibly lead to a possible Bugsnax sequel in the future or a DLC, or it could just be a suspense to keep players on their toes.
I'd also like to talk about something that happens when you open the game with your boss. During a conversation, you randomly cover one eye with your hand, and then black appears on the sides of the screen. It happens very fast, but it could portend that she is part of the Grumpinati.
Also, there is a photo of Eggabell and Lizbert sitting on the beach watching a sunset together in the credits scene. It is unclear if they really survived or if this is just a way of showing that they may have perished but are still together in some place of happy peace.
We also see a quick photo of one of the strawberry-shaped Bugsnax heading to the mainland from the same ship that safely brought everyone back here. It could mean that the Bugsnak is on its way to town and could cause trouble, but who knows?
