 For many players launching into Demon's Souls for the first time, Phalanx will be the first boss in the game that you actually have a chance to beat. Here's everything you need to know about how to beat Phalanx in Demon Souls.

How to beat Phalanx in Demon's Souls

There is not much in Phalanx compared to other bosses in Demon's Souls. You will come across the only part of this boss that can really hurt you on the way to your boss fight. These little enemies known as hoplites are blobs with spears and shields.

Phalanx itself is just a giant blob with a bright green core surrounded by hoplites. Keep your distance and keep moving around Phalanx. You won't be able to hit this boss clean until you take out some enemies first.

Just run to the side of the hoplite that doesn't have a shield and hit it multiple times to kill it. These enemies and Phalanx herself are extremely prone to fire damage. Incendiary bombs and pine resin (used to ignite your weapon) are your friends here for dealing massive damage quickly.

However, fire is not essential to defeat this boss. You can simply continue to kill the hoplites as they break away from Phalanx, leaving the boss completely vulnerable and unable to attack you. From there, there are no easier bosses in the game.

Keep your distance

If you get too close, the hoplites could stab you with their spears. If you are far away, they will have to resort to inaccurate spear throws.

Wait for the hoplites to break away from Phalanx.

Eventually, some of the enemies protecting the boss will slip away, and you can kill them from behind.

Or use fire

Fire is extremely effective against phalanxes and hoplites.

Take out Phalanx

Once all the hoplites have been defeated, the giant blob known as Phalanx will be easy to kill. You don't need to defeat every hoplite, but it makes the last step a lot easier.
