While it may seem easier to launch light attacks until your enemy dies in Godfall, it can actually be beneficial to focus on Soulshatter's damage.

By hitting an enemy with Soulshatter damage, it is possible to stun them and open them up for a large attack.

The skill can also be enhanced with skill points, and once it's maxed out, Soulshatter's damage can create a shockwave that spreads the stack to surrounding enemies, allowing you to power up. Eliminate the hordes of enemies even faster.
